CB Radio Antenna Mount

This whole mount costs about $5 to build and makes a surprisingly strong antenna platform. You can get the aluminum flat-bar at Home Depot. A drill press is really nice in order to get clean, accurate holes in the bag mounting rail. Drill the holes about 1" apart and make sure they are centered between the top and bottom of the rail. My antenna is placed as close to the rear as possible in order to clear a passenger or my RevPak seat bag. The detail of the rail and bolt assembly is shown below only in the end view. There should be 2 nut and bolt assemblies used.
Mine originally supported a 3' Firestik fiberglass no ground plane antenna (shown) which is fairly heavy. I've since replaced it with a 2 footer. Obviously, you loose some range with the shorter antenna; also, I think the rider blocks some of the signal.

There are 3 ways to optimize your CB's range tune, tune tune... the antenna (with apologies to your local realtor).

Firestik has the best after sales service of anyone I've dealt with. They also have a super tech section on antennas (antennae ?)

I couldn't get my SWR reading down below 2.75. Firestik advised me to replace the antenna tuning screw with one 3" long (get a 1/4-20 Philips head bolt). That did the trick. Also, you must put the plastic cap on when testing with the SWR meter. Finally, put a little RTV on the locking ring to help prevent it from coming loose. And remember to go to an open area to do your testing. I went to the local park.
This is the tuning screw. I replaced the original 1 1/2" long screw with this 2 1/2" stainless steel screw.
